The Kosovo/South Ossetia rethoric and old Europe

Problems for EU – right now and in the near future:

  • EUobserver has a good article today about how EU and Moscow have switched sides in the retoric regarding independence in recent cases such as Kosovo, South Ossetia and Abkhazia. Do you have recommendations for good readings on the principle of “territorial integrity”?
  • The European population is getting older, and number of deaths will outnumber births seven years from now, according to projections done by Eurostat for the periode between 2008-2060. Despite immigration, the EU population will start to decrease by 2035. Who are going to pay for our schools, hospitals, roads, elderly homes, etc? Time to rethink immigration policy? Or do as the Irish (become Catholic and abandon condoms/birth control), one of the European countries with the strongest population growth?
